The first time that I started typing with a keyboard I was searching through the keyboard looking for a letter. It took me about 20 minutes to type a sentence. The first word that I could touch type was “Google.” Today I never need to look at my keyboard. I learned by forcing myself not to look at the keyboard. Are you a touch typist? If you are trying to become a touch typist, here are a few tips on getting started.

1. If you have a keyboard tray, push it in with your keyboard on it and type that way. This forces your brain to learn were the keys are. It is a great way to learn how to touch type.

2. Be sure to keep your hands in the correct position on the keyboard. Make sure that your two index fingers are on the F and J key and your two thumbs are on the space bar.

3. Choose the right keyboard. Do not get a cheep piece of crap! If you can, spend the extra money and get a quality keyboard for a good experience. I use and recommend a Logitech keyboard.

4. When learning how to type, you need to have the keyboard and monitor directly in front of you. Not to the side and not tilted.

5. Start off with a full size keyboard. On full size keyboards, the keys are bigger and you have more room. Later on when you can type a little better, you might be able to get something a little smaller.

Well, that is about it. If you have any tips please E-mail me at Stephen@techy.tk.
